Did you know Hofstra Law has a global presence? More than 150 alumni are currently practicing in countries around the world, including Afghanistan, Bahrain, France, Germany, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Thailand, and the United Kingdom.
This December, Allyson Lehrer, director of alumni relations, had the pleasure of meeting with Michael Yadgar ’99, who resides in the Kingdom of Bahrain, a sovereign state in the Persian Gulf.
Here are some highlights from their conversation:
Like many of our alumni, Michael credits his incredible career to his time at Hofstra Law, and the relationships he formed and continues to maintain. Michael started his career as an attorney in New York, first at Certilman Balin, and then at Sidley Austin. During his six years at Sidley Austin, Michael’s principal areas of practice were securities, futures-related funds, and corporate transactions. He was also involved in the successful development and launch of the first commodity pool to be listed on a securities exchange in the U.S.
From there, his life took a truly remarkable turn. Michael, the son of Jewish Bahraini immigrants, had the opportunity to meet with the ruling royal family of Bahrain while they were in New York. A member of the royal family encouraged Michael to consider working as an attorney in Bahrain. The encounter lead to Michael gaining dual citizenship, and he started to consider opportunities in Bahrain.
Fast forward, and Michael has the opportunity to serve as the legal director for DLA Piper’s Middle East corporate group, based in Bahrain — he takes it!
While leading DLA Piper’s Bahrain office, Michael focused on general corporate securities law, mergers and acquisitions, and investment funds. He has since left DLA Piper and currently works as the director of special projects at Apiso.io, an integrated financial solutions firm in Bahrain.
Michael’s story is fascinating — personally and professionally — and Hofstra Law, and Allyson, are so fortunate to have the opportunity to meet with outstanding alumni like Michael.
