Judge Gail Prudenti has been appointed to a newly established COVID-19 Recovery Task Force to oversee the pro bono network of lawyers who will be assisting New Yorkers suffering from the pandemic. The Task Force is a joint effort of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) and the state court system.

“The impact of this pandemic has led to a significant increase in the number of individuals who need immediate legal assistance,” said Judge Gail Prudenti, Dean of Hofstra Law and former Chief Administrative Judge of the Courts of New York State. “I look forward to working with this distinguished group to determine how Hofstra Law and other law schools can play a role in expanding access to justice and offering crucial legal services.”

The pro bono network’s first task is dispatching lawyers to help jobless workers apply for unemployment benefits, but will also handle a range of other issues, including evictions, domestic violence, and job and housing discrimination.

The Task Force will focus on setting priorities, recruiting lawyers, coordinating resources and connecting lawyers and clients.

“The blue-ribbon panel we have assembled includes some of the best minds the New York legal community has to offer,” said Chief Judge Janet DiFiore. “I have the utmost confidence that this panel will ensure that those who are in desperate need of legal help will get the assistance they need.”
