Program trains students in legal technology and other in-demand skills
The Maurice A. Deane School of Law and its Office of Career Services have partnered with leading legal consultants and content providers, DOAR and Hotshot, to create the Summer Skills Institute, a series of online training modules in legal technology, transactional law and litigation. The Institute is modeled on programs offered by leading law firms to train their summer and junior associates.
“The current pandemic has affected many students’ summer internship plans, and we want to ensure that they still have the opportunity to develop critical lawyering skills and build their resumes,” said Judge Gail Prudenti, Dean of Hofstra Law. “We thank DOAR and Hotshot, as well as our outstanding alumni, for their generosity and for working with us to create these unique programs.”
The Law School will offer four training programs with both synchronous and asynchronous components to allow participants to learn at their own pace over the summer. The segments are taught and facilitated by members of DOAR, Hofstra Law Professor John Tsiforas, and alumni. The Summer Skills Institute is offered to Hofstra Law students at no cost. Participants will receive a certificate for completing the series of courses in each subject.
DOAR, a leading global consulting firm advising lawyers at top tier law firms and major corporations, has partnered with Hofstra Law in previous years for their annual national Medical-Legal Trial Competition.
“We are excited to partner with Hofstra Law again on another stellar learning opportunity,” said Gene Klimov, CTO of DOAR and Hofstra University alumnus. “The Summer Skills program will enable the next generation of legal professionals to continue their studies during this unprecedented time and gain real-world insight from top consultants and litigators.”
Hotshot, a provider of digital learning content to the legal industry, is providing free access to students and faculty to Hotshot’s videos and other content, which will serve as the foundation for the online sessions in transactional law and litigation.
“Hofstra Law students are going to benefit tremendously from this program. It’s terrific that the school and alumni came together to offer support in such an innovative way during these times, and I’m glad that Hotshot was able to pitch in,” said Hofstra Law alumnus Ian Nelson ’99, Co-Founder of Hotshot.
The four training programs offered are:
