The Hofstra Law community is saddened by the passing of John Dewitt Gregory, a renowned professor of family law at Hofstra Law for over 40 years and a driving force in the development and growth of the Law School’s esteemed family law program.
Professor Gregory also served the Law School as a vice dean and was the founding director of the Law School’s first clinical program, a neighborhood law office to help those in need. He was an esteemed Sidney and Walter Siben Distinguished Professor of Family Law and his years of dedication, commitment and service to Hofstra Law helped to build and maintain the Law School’s tradition of excellence and bolstered its reputation in the legal community.
He received many honors and awards throughout his impressive academic career, notably the Law Faculty Distinguished Service Award, the Hofstra University Distinguished Faculty Lecturer, and the Outstanding Faculty Award. He retired with emeritus status following the 2012-2013 school year.
A special memorial service commemorating the life and achievements of Professor Gregory will be held by the Law School in the near future.
