Remembering Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Her Hofstra Law Connections

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg had many ties to the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, including speaking at the Law School’s 1996 ethics conference, writing an article in the Hofstra Law Review, teaching in the summer Study Abroad Program, and meeting with students and alumni at the Supreme Court.

Professor Leon Friedman attended law school with Justice Ginsburg and also worked with her at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Professor Friedman spoke with News12 Long Island, saying “She inspired everyone that came into contact with her.”

“She was a guiding light, a living legal legend, inspiration to so many (especially women lawyers) and will be an icon of inspiration in the American legal system forever,” wrote Judge Prudenti in an article for the New York Law Journal. Judge Prudenti also discussed Justice Ginsburg’s impact with CBS2 New York.

Justice Ginsburg’s Ties to Hofstra Law

1996: Justice Ginsburg speaks at Hofstra Law’s Legal Ethics Conference as part of the Law School’s 25th Anniversary Celebration. Watch her speech.

1997: Hofstra Law Review publishes article written by Justice Ginsburg on advancing the equal stature of men and women under the law. 1997, 2001 & 2004: Justice Ginsburg taught Comparative Constitutional Law in Hofstra Law’s Summer Skills Program in Nice, France and Sorrento, Italy.

2018: Justice Ginsburg meets with Judge Prudenti and alumni during Supreme Court Bar Swearing-In ceremony.

2019: Law students in Professor Leon Friedman’s Constitutional Law class observe two Supreme Court arguments and speak with Justice Ginsburg. Prof. Friedman has taken past classes to visit the Supreme Court and meet Justice Ginsburg.
