The Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University and the Hofstra Bioethics Center are launching a new joint JD/MA in Bioethics degree program beginning Fall 2022.
As careers in and around health law increasingly confront ethical challenges, students in the JD/MA in Bioethics program will be trained to enter a wide variety of jobs in government, community health, hospitals, and law offices that serve health care facilities, providers, and patient groups.
“The new joint degree program builds on Hofstra Law’s growing expertise in health law, and provides an avenue for JD students interested in law and bioethics to pursue their long-term career goals,” said Judge Gail Prudenti, Dean of Hofstra Law.
The joint degree is an expansion of Hofstra’s Master of Arts in Bioethics degree program that launched in 2021. Unlike more traditional bioethics programs, the MA in Bioethics is designed as a dynamic career-enhancement degree for professionals and pre-professionals in law, health care and related fields. With the MA’s emphasis on practical, legal and clinical education and training, the joint JD/MA degree program is ideally suited to provide JD students with the opportunity to pursue their bioethics interests concurrent with their JD studies.
“The JD/MA in Bioethics program will create a new context around which Hofstra Law students can intensify their law experience, and augment their education and training in new and career-expanding directions,” said Professor Janet Dolgin, Jack and Freda Dicker Distinguished Professor of Health Care Law; Co-Director of Hofstra’s Bioethics Center; and Director of Hofstra Law’s Gitenstein Institute for Health Law and Policy. “The program will enhance both educational and career opportunities for our students, and foster a deeper understanding of current and future ethical challenges in law, medicine, healthcare and related fields.”
New students applying to Hofstra Law will be required to submit applications to both the JD and MA programs, and to be accepted into both programs. Current Hofstra Law JD students may apply to the MA program at any time prior to the completion of their second year of law school.
