On February 7, 2024, the Black Law Student Association (BLSA) celebrated Black History Month with an Atrium Takeover that featured an art gallery, spoken word, and games for attendees to bond over. The event kicked off with a powerful spoken word performance by Acapella Evangelist (Uriah Williams), that featured two of his poems entitled “Ten for Ten” and “Yin.”

Following the performance, students viewed the art exhibits that were displayed throughout the atrium (view photos). BLSA members also signed letters to their professors, inviting them to the upcoming BLSA Alumni Brunch on Saturday, March 9, 2024. The event will help foster important connections between alumni/faculty and current law students looking for guidance and support in the legal field.

Second-year Hofstra Law student Alexis Gooding serves as the BLSA membership chair and played a big role in preparing for the event. “I think it’s really important to celebrate Black History Month out loud,” she says. “During my 1L year, we had a celebration but it was really only amongst the black law students. We wanted the event to be open to as many people as possible, which is why we chose to host it in the atrium this year.”

Alexis along with other members of the organization believe community events like this are crucial to cultivating safe and inclusive environments for minorities to succeed. “It’s important for us, as the e-board of BLSA, to try to enhance the experience of the incoming 1Ls,” she says. “I hope that they take on the same role as us when the next set of 1Ls come in. It’s one thing to break ground but it’s another thing to have other people break it for you. When this happens you’re put in a place where you can break the ground even deeper. I think that’s what we’re trying to do here at Hofstra Law.”
