On March 1, 2024, Hofstra Law hosted its Youth Law Day for students from Freeport, Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Uniondale High Schools. This marks the first time that the event has been held since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The day kicked off with breakfast and a warm welcome from Interim Dean Julian Ku, followed by an insightful presentation on the benefits of choosing a career in law by Academic Success Professor Benjie Louis. Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, Tara-Marie Desruisseaux played an instrumental role in organizing the event.

“I was so grateful to help bring back this event after so many years,” says Desruisseaux. “I cannot emphasize enough how important it is that we are engaging with young people, particularly those from our local schools. Our surrounding community is filled with bright and eager minds, and we wanted an opportunity for high school students to gain greater insight into the possibilities that law school can offer. It also served as a wonderful chance for the students to see our beautiful campus and possibly envision themselves as future Hofstra students, whether that be for undergrad or for law school.”

Later in the day, students participated in a series of interactive sessions that included a mock trial class, a law student panel, a lunch and Q&A with alumna Judge Darlene D. Harris ’89, and a full campus tour of Hofstra University.
