On October 2, 2024, the Hofstra Law Council on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, together with the Latino/a American Law Students Association (LALSA), hosted an atrium takeover in celebration of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month. The event included an informational table that showcased the significance of the month and highlighted influential Hispanic lawyers who have made an impact in the legal field. Students also tasted a variety of Hispanic-inspired cuisines and desserts.

Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month is celebrated in the United States from September 15 to October 15. This celebration of Hispanic and Latinx culture began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week and was later expanded to an entire month. The celebration’s mid-September start is significant as it coincides with the independence days of several Latin American countries. Events like these hold great significance to students like Elizabeth Mauter, president of LALSA.

“As a Hispanic woman, raised in a bicultural home, in one of the most culturally diverse communities in New York, I take great pride in representing the Hispanic community within the legal field,” says Elizabeth. “I believe diversity, equity, and inclusion are important to promoting full and equal participation in the legal profession and in the court system because of people like my mother – someone who was very often judged by her broken English or the complexion of her skin. I am a product of diversity and a threat to such is a threat to me. Therefore, as President of LALSA, I hope to help foster a community that promotes Hispanic leaders in law. Which is why I believe events like the Hispanic Heritage Celebration are important, not only does it bring the community together, but it also acknowledges and honors the contributions of Hispanic individuals.”
