Hofstra Law Named a Top School for Family Law by preLaw Magazine

PreLaw magazine has awarded Hofstra Law an “A-” rating for its Family Law offerings. The ratings were announced in preLaw’s Back to School 2024 issue in the article “Top Schools for Health, Human Rights, Child & Family Law.” 

PreLaw magazine evaluates law schools by assessing the range and depth of their curricular offerings, which include concentrations, clinics, centers, externships, journals, student organizations, certificates, and more.

Hofstra Law’s offerings in Family Law include: 

  • Concentration in Family Law – Students enrolled in the Family Law Concentration receive instruction and training in those subject areas fundamental to family law practice, in addition to instruction in specialized, related subject areas of their choosing.
  • Youth Advocacy Clinic – Students in the Clinic learn the facets of client advocacy through the challenging experience of representing immigrant children and youth in Family Court and Immigration Court.
  • The Robert and Priscilla Livingston Center for Children, Families and the Law – Established in 2001 in response to the urgent need for more effective representation for children and families in crisis, the Center provides students with the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children and families engaged in the legal system through interdisciplinary and experiential learning including unique opportunities to participate in community service, public policy projects, legal representation, dispute resolution, and research. 
  • Child and Family Advocacy Fellowship Program – Established in 2002, the fellowship is one of the most comprehensive fellowship programs of its kind in the country and provides the foundation fellows need to become effective advocates, members of the judiciary, leaders of the bar and legislators who will work collaboratively with those from related disciplines to improve the family court system in America.
  • Externships with organizations such as The Legal Aid Society, the Children’s Law Center, the Department of Social Services, the Harvard Legal Aid Bureau, Lawyers for Children, and several family court judges’ and district attorneys’ offices.
  • Family Court Review – an international, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed quarterly family law journal (published under the auspices of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, or AFCC), whose editorial staff is based at Hofstra Law
  • The Family Law Society –  A Hofstra Law student organization. 
  • More than 20 courses, such as Children and the Law; Collaborative Family Law Seminar; Comparative Family Law; Aging and the Law Seminar; 17-A Guardianship Demonstration Project; Rights of LGBT Youth: A Comparative Approach; International Family Law.
