Kleopatra Amirah Jones is a first-year student at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. What does Black History Month mean to you?

Black History Month means highlighting all that Black culture has contributed globally and historically. We are multifaceted in the most authentic way. We come from resilience, fortitude, and wisdom. The milestones and accomplishments achieved in the Black community depict everything that our ancestors fought for. Black History Month sheds light on what we have overcome and what we are capable of.

What areas of law are you interested in and why?

I am interested in criminal and family law due to my passion for justice and advocacy for underrepresented groups. Individuals who are at a disadvantage when it comes to advocating for themselves deserve a zealous representative. I enjoy interacting with people and building personal relationships with my future clients. I also have a strong interest in the study of criminology.

How has your identity as a Black law student shaped your experience in law school?

My identity as a Black law student shaped my experience in law school by allowing me to view my “why” through a lens of humility and gratitude. I am grateful for the opportunity to access this knowledge and use it to aid people, who may not have the same ability to study law. The fortitude and zeal I have to succeed in this space derives from the grit that’s been instilled in me ancestrally.

How do you hope it will influence the way you practice law in the future?

The humility and gratitude that I will carry throughout my career will influence my drive to efficiently represent my clients and put my best foot forward in the preparation to ensure that they receive justice. The mentality that shaped my law school experience will impact how I navigate the field of law.
