Second-year Hofstra Law student Isabella Schaetzle at National Grid with supervisor Olga.

Isabella Schaetzle is a second-year law student at Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University. She has a passion for sports law and an educational background in sports management, sports recreation, and leadership. Her participation in the Phillip Randall Scott, Esq. Internship—an exclusive legal partnership between Hofstra Law and National Grid—gave her access to invaluable real-world corporate law experience.

As an intern, what kind of legal projects did you work on?

I attended legal team meetings with attorneys from various practice areas such as commercial law, real estate, litigation, and environmental law. Watching the attorneys lead meetings taught me how to effectively hold leadership roles. I also researched New York and Massachusetts case law and provided write-ups to send to attorneys.

Being able to handle various issues and deadlines at the same time was a great skill for me to refine as well as learning soft skills in preparations for mediations, negotiations, and settlement discussions.

How did this experience contribute to your growth in law school?

This internship is an in-house counsel role, which differs from working for a law firm. This means that National Grid is your only client and that unique experience was really important for me to have because in the future I would love to be in an in-house counsel role in my legal career.

One of the biggest impacts for me during the internship was the mentorship I received. I had weekly mentor meetings and that was very transformative for me because it expanded not only my legal experience but also my personal development and growth. It has allowed me to move forward and has given me a new level of confidence.

What are some of your favorite memories from this internship?

Being able to go to the Boston office and meet the entire Phillip Randall Scott Internship Committee leadership team that interviewed me for the position was a great memory. Also, I enjoyed participating in the “Gridtern Giveback Week,” where I volunteered at Habitat for Humanity ReStore. I spent the day helping with donations and staging houses and it was great to take time to give back to the community.

The National Grid Phillip Randall Scott, Esq. Internship program was established in honor and memory of Phillip R. Scott, a Hofstra Law graduate of the Class of 1990, who had a successful 30-year legal career starting as a summer intern at LILCO and ultimately rising through the ranks to Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at National Grid. Phil was widely recognized as an inspiring leader, generous mentor, and champion of inclusion and diversity.
