Hofstra Law Professor Theo Liebmann

Clinical Professor of Law and Executive Director of the Monroe H. Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics Theo Liebmann was interviewed by Newsday in “President Donald Trump takes on lawyers who have challenged him in the past.”

Prof. Liebmann recalled similar attacks during President Trump’s first term, and felt a level of confidence that the immigration bar would not stop accepting clients based on a recent memo to the Attorney General.

Trump’s broad memo asking Bondi to investigate what he describes as frivolous lawsuits appears to open the door to more probes against immigration lawyers representing asylum-seekers, said Theo Liebmann, executive director of Hofstra University’s Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics.

A section of Trump’s memo describes the immigration legal system as being marred by “rampant fraud and meritless claims” that impose “an enormous burden on the Federal Government.”

“The Friday memo really went after immigration lawyers,” Liebmann said, adding that he does not believe the memo is going to “dissuade the immigration bar from taking clients because the immigration bar is very used to the attacks. He did it during the first administration.”
