Professor Ellen Yaroshefsky to Join Hofstra Law, Head Ethics Institute

Ellen Yaroshefsky, the Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professor of Legal Ethics and Director of the Monroe H. Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal EthicsThe Maurice A. Deane School of Law has announced that Professor Ellen Yaroshefsky will be joining the Law School faculty this summer as the Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professor of Legal Ethics and director of the newly named Monroe H. Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics.

“Professor Yaroshefsky is a nationally recognized scholar in ethics, criminal law and civil rights, and brings an inspiring commitment to justice to the Law School,” said Dean Eric Lane. “She is already making her mark at Hofstra Law.”

In September, the Law School will be hosting an event organized by Professor Yaroshefsky featuring attorney Dean Strang, one of the lawyers for Steven Avery, whose case was featured on the hit Netflix series Making a Murderer.

Professor Yaroshefsky joins Hofstra Law from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, where she has served as a clinical professor of law, the executive director of the Jacob Burns Ethics Center and the director of the Youth Justice Clinic.

She represents lawyers and law firms in criminal, civil and disciplinary matters and serves as an expert witness on legal ethics issues. She also serves as an ethics consultant and frequently lectures on topics about the law of lawyering to a wide variety of bar associations and other groups.

Professor Yaroshefsky is co-chair of the Ethics, Gideon and Professionalism Committee of the American Bar Association’s Criminal Justice Section, co-chair of the Ethics Committee of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the ethics advisor for the Prosecutorial and Judicial Complaint Center of the New York Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and a member of the advisory board of the Justice Center of the New York County Lawyers Association and of the New York State Bar Association Committee on Standards of Attorney Conduct. She has also served on various committees of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York.

She has received several awards for litigation and the New York State Bar Association award for “Outstanding Contribution in the Field of Criminal Law Education.”

About the Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship in Legal Ethics
The Howard Lichtenstein Distinguished Professorship was established in 1989 to remember Howard Lichtenstein, an outstanding lawyer with a genuine interest in legal education and the training and development of young lawyers. During his 44 years of practice, his primary concentration was in the field of labor law. In addition, Lichtenstein was a strong advocate for the teaching of legal ethics.

About the Monroe H. Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics
Hofstra Law’s Monroe H. Freedman Institute for the Study of Legal Ethics serves as a research center for the study of legal ethics issues. In addition to offering courses in professional responsibility, the Freedman Institute sponsors speakers, conferences and symposiums and provides opportunities for student and faculty research.

The institute was recently named to forever memorialize Monroe H. Freedman and his extraordinary accomplishments in bringing legal ethics to the forefront and creating a field of study where none previously existed, which are unparalleled and respected by all in the legal community.
