The ability to promise judicial candidates uncontested elections to powerful positions can give party leaders the ability to “maximize machine power,” said James Sample, an expert on judicial elections and a professor at the Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University.
“There’s power to be gained by being able to promise somebody essentially a guaranteed position on the bench with a six-figure salary, a 14-year term and a significant element of prestige,” Sample said. “That’s a powerful perk to be able to dole out.”
