Recent Hofstra Law graduate Chanya Sainvilus ’17 finished in the top 10 out of 240 entrants in the Philip R. Shawe Scholarship Competition, which began in March during Chanya’s last semester of law school and concluded on July 20. It was sponsored by Shawe, the co-CEO of TransPerfect, a provider of language and technology solutions.
He launched the competition to award grants totaling $100,000 ($65K, $25K and $10K) to the top three law students — or student teams — who could prepare the most compelling argument to the U.S. Supreme Court for reversing the decision of the TransPerfect case in the Delaware Chancery Court that seeks to force the sale of the privately held company against the wishes of two out of three shareholders.
Chanya and her fellow competitors — second- and third-year law students at accredited U.S. law schools — were required to prepare a brief of no more than 15 pages to “address the U.S. constitutional implications (Due Process and Takings Clauses) of the Delaware courts’ powers to adopt a forced sale remedy when shareholders of a highly profitable, privately held corporation are deadlocked.”
From the 240 briefs submitted, the top 25 were chosen by a group of experienced counsel from Lateral Link Group. Those 25 briefs were then evaluated and ranked by a panel of distinguished legal scholars: Presiding Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick (Ret.), senior associate judge of the New York State Court of Appeals; Justice Melvin Schweitzer (Ret.) of the New York State Supreme Court, Commercial Division; Joseph D. Hansen, former director of interns for Justice Schweitzer; and Alan M. Dershowitz, the Felix Frankfurter Professor of Law, Emeritus, Harvard Law School.
The panel chose three finalists, who presented mock Supreme Court oral arguments to the panel on July 20 at the historic landmark courtroom in Brooklyn Borough Hall. Chanya (on the right in the courtroom photo) and the other top 10 entrants were also invited to attend the final round and award ceremony, at which they were honored.
