Professor James Sample commented by telephone for a May 14 News12 Long Island report on the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that day that the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act was unconstitutional.
The 1992 law forbade state-authorized sports gambling, with some exceptions, on football, basketball, baseball and other sports.
In the broadcast, reporter Virginia Huie introduced Professor Sample’s comments by saying, “Experts say the ruling is a victory for states who have been considering allowing sports gambling to seize on the tax-revenue potential.”
