preLaw Magazine has named Hofstra Law as one of 25 “Most Innovative Law Schools” in the Winter 2022 edition of its magazine. The article highlights the Law School’s interdisciplinary Legal Innovation Tournament which is hosted with Hofstra’s Fred DeMatteis School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the New York State Bar Association.

The Legal Innovation Tournament was created in 2021 to allow students from New York law schools the opportunity to develop apps to help serve the underrepresented and to change the face of dispute resolution. During the tournament law students were matched with legal experts in the areas of dispute resolution and access to justice, as well as computer science students.

The winning team of Hofstra Law students created an app to simplify the debt collection process and to alleviate compounding of default judgements that can go unnoticed for years. The Law School is hosting the 2022 Legal Innovation Tournament on April 8.

The Legal Innovation Tournament continues Hofstra Law’s commitment to developing cutting-edge programs to prepare law students for the future of legal practice. Hofstra Law was one of the first law schools in the country to develop a center for legal technology in 2010. The Law, Logic & Technology Research Laboratory (LLT Lab) develops applications and tools that make legal practice and legal education more effective and efficient.

More recently, Hofstra Law has expanded its offerings to include courses in cybersecurity, cryptocurrency and courtroom technology. The Law School has also invested in its “Courtroom of the Future,” where students are trained in trial software, digital presentations and preservation of evidence and videoconferencing for off-site witnesses and experts.
