On February 4, 2022, Professor Akilah Folami participated in a New York City Bar CLE program panel “Integrating Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion into the Core Law Curriculum: A Fireside Chat with Professor Teri McMurtry-Chubb.”
The virtual panel discussed how law schools and law professors have struggled for years to integrate issues of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into the core law school curriculum and what steps should be taken. Topics included how to understand multigenerational racial trauma in the context of the American legal education; the tension between academic freedom and DEI; and assessing the institutional climate for DEI curricula. In addition, two case studies of implementing DEI in the law school curriculum were discussed.
