Ronald J. Colombo, Professor of Law

Professor Ronald Colombo co-authored an amicus letter urging the Supreme Court of California to review the lower court decision in Chrissie Carnell Bixler, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, Jane Doe #1 & Jane Doe #2 v. Church of Scientology International, et al. Second District Court of Appeal No. B310559 Los Angeles County Superior Court Case No. 9STCV29458.

Plaintiffs, former members of the Church of Scientology, allege that that they were raped and sexually assaulted by actor Daniel Masterson. They further allege that the Church of Scientology harassed and otherwise harmed them after they came forward with their rape and sexual assault allegations. These latter claims of harassment against the Church are subject to an arbitration agreement that plaintiffs entered into when joining the Church of Scientology.

The lower court held that since the plaintiffs were no longer members of the Church, they were no longer bound by the arbitration agreement they had entered into. Professors Colombo and Boyde argue that this holding violates the Federal Arbitration Act and misconstrues the First Amendment.
