Natural disasters and political upheaval fuel human migration. Hurricane Maria, a deadly category 5 hurricane, devastated islands in the northeastern Caribbean in 2017. That led more than 13,000 evacuees to relocate to Connecticut. Now there’s Hurricane Fiona blowing through the Caribbean and US Governors treating asylum seekers like pawns in their political power games. How does our area offer shelter to people reeling from natural or political chaos? And what happens to them when the storms stop?
