Through the assistance of the Office of Student Affairs, third-year Hofstra Law student Jamin Enquist was connected with alumnus Joey Jackson ’95. This summer he interned at Jackson’s law firm and during his time there gained experience in the criminal law field, networked with Hofstra Law alumni, and much more.

Not Your Typical Internship

At JOEY JACKSON LAW, PLLC., interns are challenged everyday to apply what they’ve learned in their classes into the real world. For Jamin, gaining hands-on experience in and out of the courtroom really has helped set him up for success.

“From the first day I started I was jumping in and doing research on cases, writing up summaries of pre-trial conferences for disciplinary proceedings for the unions and correction officers we work with and a variety of other matters.”

“From the first day I started I was jumping in and doing research on cases, writing up summaries of pre-trial conferences for disciplinary proceedings for the unions and correction officers we work with and a variety of other matters,” says Jamin.

The work that he did while he was interning “significantly contributed in every way” to the firm’s success.

“I think the impact that Jamin has made has been beyond substantial,” says Jackson. “In terms of preparing the lawyers for court in administrative proceedings, looking at the cases, looking at the administrative regulations and rules that applied, looking at the facts, and assessing cases by giving us the strengths and the weaknesses, it was very big for us.”

Alumni Impact

Jackson embodies everything it means to be a part of the Hofstra Law community and alumni like him always want to help the next generation of Hofstra Law lawyers succeed.

“I know what every Hofstra student goes through to get to where they are. I value what the professors give to them, I value the Clinics that they have, I value the nature of the education and the commitment that the school and administration has to it,” says Jackson. “I think that anyone that could succeed in that environment, which is a nurturing environment, is certainly worthy of an opportunity.”

While at his internship, Jamin shadowed different attorneys and connected with Hofstra Law alumni that worked for the firm. He also was able to gain valuable insight and words of wisdom from Jackson.

“It’s been a special experience to be able to work with Joey and be able to get feedback, ask questions, get advice and perspective on his experience in practice. As well as to see how far he has come in his own journey in the law and where this firm has gone as it’s grown the last couple of years.”

A Valuable Experience

For Jamin, this internship really helped him explore the endless opportunities that law has to offer legal professionals. He believes that internships are a vital part of the learning experience in law school.

“You’re going to learn a lot. In most internships you’re going to be able to work with attorneys on projects and cases and get experience and exposure to what it’s like to practice and hopefully in an area where you are considering working. Even if you’re not considering working in a specific field of practice, it’s worth still taking that internship and getting the experience and exposure because sometimes it changes your mind and for me this summer that was my experience.”
