Hofstra Law Trial Teams Have Successful Fall Season

Building on their success this past year, Hofstra Law’s trial teams started the 2014-2015 competition season by placing in three events this fall.

In the opening competition of the season, the Peter James Johnson National Civil Rights Competition, sponsored by St. John’s University School of Law on Oct. 23-26, the Hofstra Law team of Lucas Kessler 3L, Matthew Perry 3L, Lauren Reilly 2L and Andres Sanchez 3L was a quarterfinalist. Sanchez also was named the Best Overall Advocate for the Preliminary Rounds. The team was coached by Alexi Poulianos ’11, Elizabeth Quinn ’05 and Jared Rosenblatt ’03.

In November at the Quinnipiac University School of Law Criminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition, a national competition, the Hofstra Law team of Carissa Danesi 2L, Omar Harding 3L, Sean Hughes 3L and Nipun Marwaha 2L was a semifinalist. The team was coached by Gerard McCloskey ’08, Jana McNulty ’14 and Rosenblatt.

On Nov. 8-11 in its last contest of the fall semester, the 36-team Buffalo-Niagara Mock Trial Competition, also a national competition, the Hofstra Law team of Kyle Schiedo 2L, Aaron Spurlock 3L, Helene Weiss 2L and Felicia Winder 2L was a 2nd-place finalist, advancing to the eighth and final round and losing by only one point. Spurlock also won an award for Best Overall Summation. The team was coached by Kaitlyn Flynn ’14, Laura Kitchen ’12 and Rosenblatt.
