Second-year Hofstra Law student Sierra Sánchez has been chosen by the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA) to receive the inaugural Ruth Bader Ginsburg Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship, created in honor of the late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is designed to honor her principles while encouraging brilliant law students. The $5,000 award is dispersed annually to second- and third-year law students in New York.

“Ms. Sanchez embodies the change we need to see in the legal profession,” NYSBA President T. Andrew Brown said. “She fought against the odds to become a successful student at a well-respected law school, worked to make a place for others like her and academically outperformed her peers. I look forward to seeing Ms. Sanchez’s contribution to our profession.”

Sánchez ranks first in her class and has contributed greatly to the advancement of women and non-binary people of color in the legal field through co-founding the Women of Color Collective (WoCC) on Hofstra Law’s campus. She is actively involved in the Hofstra Law Review and also participates in the arts and ballet.

“She’s just got this combination of mind and heart and that’s a rare thing to find in somebody especially so early in their career,” Hofstra Law Professor Maryam Franzella said. “I just think she’s just going to make a real impact and inspire other women.”
