On October 7, the Maurice A. Deane School of Law, the New York State Bar Association, and Hofstra’s School of Engineering and Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, will host a virtual National Legal Innovation Tournament. The interdisciplinary tournament will bring together law students and computer science students from across the country to compete to design apps that will help change the face of dispute resolution.
The tournament is open to all law and computer science students, as well as LLM students. Students will be teamed with computer science students from Hofstra University and legal experts in the fields of dispute resolution, as well as seasoned litigators.
Finalists will work with Hofstra University’s computer technologists to develop a prototype of the app. The winning team will receive $500 thanks to the generous support of the Dispute Resolution of the New York State Bar Association.
Hofstra Law hosted its first National Legal Innovation Tournament in January 2021 for New York state law students. The Tournament consisted of 13 teams from eight New York law schools. Hofstra Law students Jordon Flanigan, Suzanne Hassani, Nicole Kelly and Veronica Patel were named the winning team for their app to simplify the complex debt collection process and to alleviate piling default judgments that go unnoticed for years. The teamed worked with Hofstra computer engineering student Jason Jackrel.
Students can register as individuals or teams of 3 or 4. Individual registrants will be placed on a team. No prior technical background is required, and there is no cost to participate.
